Announcement from Sir Wyn Williams on Compensation
On 17 February 2022, during a human impact hearing, I raised publicly some questions concerning the application of the Interim Compensation Scheme and invited submissions from the recognised legal representative of Susan Hazzleton. I have since received written submissions from Howe and Co in response to the questions which I posed. These submissions are published today by the Inquiry alongside this announcement.
I now invite written submissions from all Core Participants to the Inquiry to address the eligibility of the following categories of persons to claim compensation under the existing schemes set up by the Post Office and its sponsoring department in government:
- Subpostmasters and subpostmistresses, managers and assistants who were charged with criminal offences and prosecuted by the Post Office but who were acquitted at trial;
- Subpostmasters and subpostmistresses, managers and assistants who were charged with criminal offences and prosecuted by the Post Office but whose cases were discontinued or withdrawn before trial;
- Subpostmasters and subpostmistresses, managers and assistants whose appeals were conceded by the Post Office on the grounds that it would not be in the public interest to retry their cases and whose convictions have been overturned by the Crown Court.
Please can any written submissions be provided to the Inquiry not later than 4pm on 4 April 2022.
