Sub-postmasters, family members and others invited to attend Inquiry engagement session

Inquiry to share plans for Legacy Project to ensure effects of Horizon scandal cannot be forgotten

The Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry is inviting sub-postmasters, branch managers, assistants, family members and others who have been affected by the Post Office Horizon scandal to attend an engagement session led by the Inquiry’s Secretariat.

The session, on Wednesday 25 October 2023, will be an opportunity for people to share their views and experiences with others, as well as to hear an update from the Inquiry’s Secretariat on upcoming activity.

Legacy Project

During the session, the Inquiry's Secretariat will share plans to develop a Legacy Project that helps to ensure the effects of the Horizon scandal cannot be forgotten.

The Inquiry wants to ensure that people affected by the Horizon scandal are central to the development of the Legacy Project, and so initial plans will be shared with those attending the engagement session. Hearing from those affected will inform work on the Legacy Project.

It is hoped that the project will culminate in creative, cultural or educational initiatives that raise awareness of the Inquiry’s findings and the impacts the scandal has had on people. Further details will be published once the engagement session and further scoping work have taken place.

Inquiry Chair, Sir Wyn Williams, began the Inquiry last year by reading and hearing about the experiences of 189 people affected by Horizon failings around the UK.

He said today: “I have spoken before of the lasting impression I was left with after hearing and reading evidence about suffering and hardship that so many have endured. I want to ensure that these effects of the Horizon failings cannot be forgotten, which is why I have asked my team to begin work on a Legacy Project.

“It is right that the very people affected by this scandal should be at the heart of shaping this, and so I would encourage all those who would wish to take part in this engagement session to attend.”

The resulting initiatives will be launched following the publication of Sir Wyn Williams’ final report. The Inquiry will work to ensure these are accessible and reflect the experiences of people affected throughout the UK.

Register for engagement session

People affected by the Horizon scandal can sign up via this form by 11 October 2023. The session will take place from 11:00 to 14:30 on 25 October at the Inquiry’s hearing venue in Aldwych House, London. It will be possible to attend in person or remotely.

As with the Inquiry’s public hearings, confidential emotional and psychological support services will be available to attendees through Hestia. Information about these services is available here.

For those unable to attend the engagement session, there will be further opportunities to learn about and feed into the Legacy Project.

Ends.
